Thailand is to lift its lockdown measures and reopen the country from July 1, according to reports.
The Thai government plan to gradually remove restrictions on businesses and citizens, which also includes the reintroduction of international travel. An emergency decree had been implemented to limit the spread of the virus, with a curfew in place for the citizens.
Business operators and customers will still be required to use the Thai Chana mobile app to check-ins and check-outs of businesses permitted to reopen during the next month.
What does this mean?
During June, the restrictions will start to be relaxed, with curfew hours and restrictions on inter-provincial travel reduced first before the reintroduction of international which is set to take place in July.
The Bangkok Post reported National Security Council secretary-general Gen Somsak Rungsita as saying “Authorities will have serious discussions because after the emergency decree ends, other laws will be used instead.
“People’s cooperation is important. This concerns the use of face masks, social distancing, hand wash and limited activities. As long as the disease is spreading worldwide, we will have to fight against it for a while.”
Thailand’s tourism sector has been preparing for lockdown measures to be lifted for several weeks, with hotels and hospitality groups carrying out deep cleans and introducing new protective measures such as screens for staff, contactless technology and social distancing signage and markings, while beaches have been cleaned up.
